Tim Atkin Wine Of The Year Winner: Best Malbec 2018
Tasting Note
To quote Tim himself 'Stunning: theres only one word to describe this brilliant cuvee of Malbec and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from Matias Etcharts isolated estate in the dramatic Quebrada de San Lucas. Deftly matured in 70% new French oak, its a polished, self-assured red with violet and wild thyme aromas, velvety tannins, pepper, bramble and blueberry fruit and the balance that comes from the best vineyards.'
2018 vintage also received high praise from Tim - 'Labelled as a Malbec, but this is a blended wine, with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon supplying extra tannin and backbone. Floral, concentrated, yet refreshingly medium bodied, it has cassis, blackberry and herbal flavours, silky, svelte, layered tannins, subtle 30% new wood, chalky minerality and remarkable poise and length. A brilliant wine from one of the best sites in the north'
Food Pairing
Pairing food with Malbec is simpler than you might think. Since the wine has a fuller body, it's an excellent match for stronger-flavoured and richer foods.
Youll find Malbec a great match for steak, pork, and lamb, as well as fattier fish like salmon and poultry with dark meat. Game meatlike bison, ostrich, and venisonare also a safe bet.
